I created Tonelingo from my own experience learning languages. As a native Chinese speaker, I've seen how challenging it can be for native English speakers to learn Chinese, especially when it comes to tones and pronunciation. At the same time, when I started learning Portuguese and Italian, I found myself struggling in a very similar way. The sounds in Romance languages can be difficult for Asian language speakers, especially because we rarely use things like true nasal vowels.
I would replay words again and again, trying to catch the sounds, slowing everything down just to understand how a single word is actually pronounced. What helped me most was breaking things down and listening to each word individually, really understanding what each word means at my own pace until I could remember it and pronounce it more naturally.
But I couldn't find any app that made this easy. Most translation tools just play full sentences over and over, and most language learning apps rely on predefined lessons.
So I built Tonelingo. It lets you translate anything you want, then tap each word to hear it clearly and understand it in a more natural way. I hope Tonelingo makes language learning feel more relaxed and personal, so you can learn what you actually want to say, whether it's song lyrics, slang, travel phrases, personal conversations, news articles, or even classic literature, instead of memorizing words from predefined courses that aren't really useful in everyday life.
